What is ITIL?
ITIL is the most widely used framework for IT service management (ITSM) — the discipline of planning, delivering, running and improving the IT services an organisation depends on. ITIL 5, the current version, moves the framework on from rigid processes to a flexible operating model built around value, and it works alongside Agile, DevOps and Lean rather than against them.
At its core sits the ITIL service value system, which shows how every part of an organisation works together to create value through services. Around that, ITIL 5 sets out its management practices and the four dimensions of service management. You don’t need to memorise all of it to get started — Foundation gives you the language and the map.
How the ITIL Certification Path Works
Everyone starts with ITIL 5 Foundation. It’s the prerequisite for every module above it and the only one with no entry requirements. From there, the scheme splits into two designations.
The Managing Professional (MP) designation is the practical, hands-on route. It covers Create, Deliver & Support, Drive Stakeholder Value and High Velocity IT, plus the universal Direct, Plan & Improve module. The Strategic Leader (SL) designation is aimed at senior roles and pairs Direct, Plan & Improve with Digital & IT Strategy.
Where to start
If you’re new to ITIL, take Foundation and stop there until you know which direction your role is heading. Most people working in or moving towards day-to-day service delivery should look at the Managing Professional modules next; those moving into senior, strategy-facing roles are better served by the Strategic Leader path.
Why ITIL Is Worth It
ITIL gives teams a common vocabulary. When everyone — from the service desk to the CIO — uses the same terms for incidents, problems, changes and service levels, work moves faster and with fewer misunderstandings. It’s requested by name in a large share of UK IT service management job adverts, which makes Foundation a practical, low-risk certification to hold early in an IT career.
Choosing an ITIL Course Provider
The most important thing to check is accreditation. ITIL courses must be delivered by an Authorised Training Organisation (ATO) of PeopleCert for the certification to be valid and employer-recognised.
