Why CompTIA Certifications Are Worth It
CompTIA certifications are vendor-neutral, which is their biggest strength. Instead of tying you to one manufacturer’s products, they prove you understand the underlying technology — so the skills travel with you across employers, tools and platforms. That’s why A+ and Security+ appear by name in so many UK IT job adverts.
They’re also structured as a ladder. You can start with no experience and build, one certification at a time, towards a specialism that pays.
To put rough numbers on it: A+ gets you into IT support roles that typically pay around £24,000–£32,000. Network+ and Security+ then open up network administrator and security analyst work, and CySA+ or PenTest+ point towards the better-paid cyber-security analyst and penetration-testing jobs. Each rung is a credential employers recognise, so you move up in steps rather than waiting on one big qualification.
Choosing Your CompTIA Pathway
IT support and infrastructure
Start with CompTIA A+ for hands-on support roles, then add Network+ and Linux+ as you move towards infrastructure. Completely new to tech? Tech+ is the gentlest way in.
Cyber security
Security+ is the usual first step, followed by CySA+ for analyst roles or PenTest+ for offensive security. SecurityX is the expert-level capstone.
Data and cloud
Data+ and Cloud+ open the door to two of the fastest-growing areas in IT.
How CompTIA Compares to Cisco
For networking specifically, people often weigh CompTIA Network+ against Cisco CCNA. Network+ is broader and vendor-neutral; CCNA goes deeper into Cisco-specific configuration. A common route is Network+ first, then CCNA — see our Cisco courses.
