About BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT

The British Computer Society (BCS) is the professional body and learned society for computing and business analysis professionals in the UK. Founded in 1957, it’s the oldest society of its kind in the world and a founding member of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP). BCS holds a royal charter and has more than 72,000 members worldwide, working across academia, industry and government.

Branded BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, it promotes the study and practice of computing, develops IT standards and qualifications, advises on professional matters, and represents its members’ interests. Its royal charter also lets it accredit and regulate the Chartered IT Professional (CITP) status. The practical upshot: when you train towards a BCS qualification, you’re working to a standard set by an independent, established authority — not a vendor.

What are BCS courses?

A BCS course is a set of videos, learning materials and resources that cover everything you need for the official BCS exam. Ours are accredited by BCS, so they’re audited against the standard BCS sets and kept aligned with the latest exam content. That alignment matters: what you study is what the exam actually tests, which is one of the biggest factors in passing first time.

Why earn a BCS certificate?

Passing a BCS course earns you a BCS certificate that validates what you’ve learnt and shows employers and colleagues you can contribute as a business analyst. It builds your professional recognition — particularly in the UK — and supports your move into more senior business analysis roles.

Why choose Career Smarter for BCS?

Our BCS Business Analysis Foundation course has an average pass mark of 89% — against the BCS average of 69% (BCS data). Every course is audited and accredited by BCS, so you have what you need to sit your official BCS exam with confidence — plus a dedicated account manager and, on completion, a Career Smarter course completion certificate and digital badge.

What a business analyst actually does

Business analysts sit between the people who need something changed and the people who can deliver it. On a typical project — say an organisation replacing a slow, manual internal process — the BA gathers what each team actually needs, documents the requirements clearly, models how the work flows today and how it should flow, weighs up the options, and keeps stakeholders aligned while the solution is built and tested. It’s a role that rewards clear communication, structured thinking and attention to detail, and it’s in steady demand because almost every change project needs one.

A real example: in 2024, British Airways began a seven-million-pound programme to improve customer service, including new mobile app development. A project on that scale relies on business analysts to gather and document what’s needed, analyse the data, identify possible solutions, work with stakeholders throughout, and help test what gets built.

Who BCS courses suit

These certifications suit anyone who wants to understand and improve how an organisation works — people moving into a business analyst role, those already doing parts of the job who want it recognised, and decision-makers who need a structured approach to change. If you enjoy problem-solving, communicate well with a team, and like getting the detail right, business analysis is a strong fit.

The BCS pathway

BCS runs a clear ladder. Everyone starts with the Foundation Certificate in Business Analysis, which has no prerequisites. From there you take practitioner certificates in the areas most relevant to your work — Requirements Engineering, Modelling Business Processes and Business Analysis Practice. Those modules build towards the International Diploma, which combines them with an oral examination. You don’t have to commit to the full Diploma on day one — many people take Foundation, get into a role, and add modules as their work demands them.

BCS official exam format

The official BCS exam isn’t included in your course fee — you book and pay for it separately with BCS, and we help you arrange it when you’re ready. Here’s what to expect:

BCS or IIBA?

If you’re weighing BCS against the international IIBA certifications, the short version is: BCS for a UK-focused career, IIBA for international or BABOK-standardised organisations. Our business analysis overview compares both, and you can see the full IIBA courses if you’re leaning that way.
