What is PRINCE2?
PRINCE2 — an abbreviation for Projects IN Controlled Environments — is a structured project management methodology and practitioner certification programme. Originally developed by the Office of Government Commerce (OGC) in 1996, it was built from best practices drawn across a wide range of industries and has since become the most widely used project management method in the UK and one of the most recognised globally.
PRINCE2 provides a common framework and language for project management. It emphasises breaking projects into manageable, controllable stages, with clear roles and responsibilities for all involved, regular reviews, and quality assurance measures built into every phase. Its adaptability means it can be scaled to fit projects of any size or complexity — from small internal initiatives to major government infrastructure programmes.
