We’ve been through over 100 job adverts for IT Technician roles in the UK, listed the skills required, and made sure you have an online course below to cover the skill set. This is an exclusively Career Smarter built career pathway of training courses that will provide a strong foundation for your IT career, and allow expansion into further roles in cybersecurity and networking.
The key skills required for IT Technician careers include, technical, networking, Windows, Office 365, ITIL and Azure. We could see IT Technicians with all the listed skills earning up to £40,080 from our job audit. This bundle includes 13 online courses from internationally recognised bodies including CompTIA, Cisco, Microsoft and Axelos.
IT support is the starting point for many IT professionals or experts working in more advanced specialisms. Understanding the technical aspects of IT will be beneficial before moving towards networking, which is built on hardware, such as routers and switches. As you become a networking expert, you may need to troubleshoot networking hardware, having the technical skills you learnt will be beneficial. Likewise, before you start a cybersecurity career, understanding how networks work will make things easier for you to comprehend. You can begin to see how IT skills can easily cross over into other specialisms. Having a good range of skills on your CV will make you highly valuable to employers and smaller organisations who can’t afford to hire several staff.
Our IT Technician Courses bundle includes 13 online courses which can be completed in any order that works for you. You'll receive 12 months of unlimited access to all of these courses, which also includes practice questions, and additional learning resources. This bundle does not include any exams, however, Career Smarter does offer a certificate of completion for each course completed. If you don't manage to complete the courses you have planned for, extending your access for another 12 months is available, and students typically receive better rates.
These courses will cover the IT technical section of the bundle, including the CompTIA A+ which is the essential course for IT Technicians.
CompTIA IT Fundamentals+ Course
Are you entirely new to IT, and need to start from the very beginning? This is what the IT Fundamentals course is about. Start with this course if you have no previous IT experience, or are not familiar with basic technical terms. If you do have some basic technical understanding, you can skip over this course.
CompTIA A+ Course
The CompTIA A+ is the must-have course, it's designed for IT Technicians and is recognised across the globe. Here we will learn everything a typical support technician needs to know, covering software and hardware, basic networking, mobile devices, security, and a few other topics. Make sure you understand that the CompTIA A+ course covers numerous topics and therefore is broken into 2 sections or courses, one is called the core 1 and the other is core 2. Once you have achieved this certification, there is no reason you can't start looking for employment.
These are the networking courses from both CompTIA and Cisco, the common next step after the technical skills have been achieved.
CompTIA Network+ Course
In the CompTIA A+ we learnt the basics of networking, enough for us to understand the basic terminology and types of networks. The weakness is that we are limited to what we can do as an IT Technician, we may need to support bigger organisations with more complex infrastructure. The CompTIA Network+ course allows us to expand our knowledge, become a more advanced and skilled support professional. Not only could we support customers at the workshop, but we can manage callouts to offices with networks. This would also be our first step towards opening the door to networking and cybersecurity careers.
Cisco CCNA Course
The Cisco CCNA course also covers networking skills, but should we complete both the CompTIA Network+ and the Cisco CCNA? If you have decided already that networking is the path you want to follow, then yes, the Cisco CCNA is more comprehensive and worth completing. Another difference of the Cisco CCNA course is that it teaches you about Cisco devices, as opposed to CompTIA Network+ which is vendor neutral and has no bias towards devices, teaching you more about networking holistically.
This is your IT security course, important to secure your networks and build towards a cybersecurity career if that is the plan.
CompTIA Security+ Course
So we've installed a network for a business or organisation, now the CompTIA Security+ course will cover how to protect it. This course is one step outside what most IT Technicians would know, but it's definitely skills worth having as cyber threats become more of an issue. If you've started to find an interest in networking, then this course is a recommended first step towards understanding IT security, and possibly moving towards a highly rewarding cybersecurity career.
These are your Cloud courses, applications are moving to the cloud and these 2 courses will make sure you don't get left behind.
CompTIA Cloud+ Course
IT Technicians should understand the cloud, as servers are moving away from local to online. Being able to deploy and install solutions for business, and then troubleshoot those applications would be beneficial in a faced paced technology world. Being able to leverage the cloud as an IT Technician is something you're going to want to know when troubleshooting for solutions, and following best practice infrastructure.
Microsoft Azure Administrator (AZ-104) Course
Following on from the CompTIA Cloud+ course, we extend our cloud knowledge with Microsoft Azure. This course covers the skills required to administer the Azure cloud computing platform developed by Microsoft. Azure is used by around 85% of Fortune 500 companies, and would be an asset in your skill set.
These are your 2 Office 365 courses, everything you need to know to work Office effectively.
Microsoft 70-346: Managing Office 365 Identities and Requirements Course
Microsoft 365 is listed as the second most popular skill requested by hiring managers and organisations, making this a valuable course on your learning pathway. This course will teach you how to evaluate, plan, deploy and operate the Office 365 services. Although this course exam has been retired by Microsoft, the skills are still relevant and worth earning your free certificate of completion from Career Smarter.
Microsoft 70-347: Enabling Office 365 Services Course
This course is the second part of the retired Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA) Office 365 certification. Again, Career Smarter can offer you a certificate of completion to support your achievement of completing all the learning material. The 70-347 training will extend from the previous Office 365 course, and focus on topics such as managing clients and end-user devices, configuring and planning Exchange Online and provision for SharePoint.
These are your 2 Windows courses, make sure you add these to your learning plan as the skills are listed at number 1 for IT Technicians.
Microsoft MD-100: Windows 10 Course
This online course covers Windows skills, the number 1 listed requirement for IT Technicians. Another retired Microsoft certification, that still delivers a significant amount of value for IT professionals. You'll learn how to install, configure and maintain the Windows operating system. The Windows operating system is used by around 72% of desktop users around the world, making this a leading platform that no IT Technician should unfamiliar with.
Microsoft MD-101: Managing Modern Desktops Course
The MD-101 course builds on the MD-100 course, and focuses on managing and deploying devices and applications in a Microsoft 365 environment. One of the key differences over the previous Windows 10 course is that there is an emphasis on enterprise mobility and security. If you complete both Windows 10 courses, you will receive the Career Smarter certificate of completion for the retired Microsoft 365 Certified: Modern Desktop Administrator Associate.
Finally, you have your ITIL Foundation course, a great course to bring structure and best practice to your role.
Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL®) — Foundation Course
The ITIL Foundation course is all about IT service management, which means making the service you provide more effective, improving how you do your job within the business. ITIL offers you a guidebook to follow, which is adopted by many big organisations like HSBC, AT&T, Vodafone, and Microsoft. Having ITIL Foundation on your CV means you already have the knowledge to hit the ground running within an ITIL organisation. Lastly, you could also use these skills to influence companies you work for, who are not using ITIL, showcasing your professionalism and expertise.
