Aspiring Business Analysts
Looking to enter business analysis and want a recognised, structured route from the fundamentals upward.
A professional SFIAplus Level 4 certification from BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, designed to demonstrate your understanding of business analysis best practice. The diploma is built from four BCS-accredited online courses — study them individually or combine them to work towards the full diploma.
About this qualification
A globally recognised business analysis qualification from BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT — built from four accredited courses you can take one at a time or as a full pathway.
The BCS International Diploma in Business Analysis is a professional SFIAplus Level 4 certification designed to demonstrate your understanding of business analysis best practice. Offered by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT — a professional body that holds royal charter recognition worldwide — it equips you with a wide range of skills, including requirements engineering, business analysis principles and techniques, approaches to investigation and improvement, and business process modelling.
Business analysis sits at the point where business needs meet workable solutions. A good analyst investigates how an organisation really works, defines what a change has to achieve, and makes sure the people building the solution understand exactly what’s required — which is why demand for the skill runs across IT, finance, government, healthcare and consultancy. The International Diploma is BCS’s structured route into that discipline, giving you the vocabulary, the techniques and a recognised credential to do the job well.
The British Computer Society (BCS) is a highly respected and valued certification organisation among IT professionals around the world. According to the BCS’s 2020 Annual Review, over 90,000 members hold one or more of their certifications, and in the UK 73% of IT professionals with professional certifications hold one of the BCS’s accreditations. That makes a BCS certification a genuine asset — one that helps you stand out and advance in an increasingly competitive job market.
Completing a BCS International Diploma in Business Analysis certification lets you earn and append AMBCS (Associate Member) post-nominals to your name, boosting your visibility and credibility within the professional community.
The programme consists of four BCS-accredited online courses. You can study them separately, leading to several individual certifications, or combine them to work towards the full international diploma. It caters to all levels of experience among business analysts and IT professionals, giving you a clear route to professional growth. On completion you’ll have a solid grasp of the fundamentals and practices of business analysis, ready to take on more challenging and rewarding roles.
The qualification sits at SFIAplus Level 4 — the “enable” level on the Skills Framework for the Information Age, which describes a professional who works under general direction and applies judgement to their own work. In practice that means it’s pitched at job-ready and practising analysts rather than complete beginners, and because SFIAplus is used worldwide the diploma is recognised internationally — it carries weight whether you work in the UK or overseas.
Is this for me?
The diploma caters to all levels of experience among business analysts and IT professionals. None of the courses require prior experience or certification.

Course structure
The diploma is made up of four BCS-accredited online courses, each around 30 hours of study. Take them individually, or combine them to work towards the full diploma.
What you’ll gain
Across the four modules you develop the full toolkit of a working analyst — not just theory, but techniques you can apply from day one.
The Foundation Certificate gives you the shared language of business analysis: the role itself, the competencies a good analyst needs, and the core investigative and modelling techniques that everything else builds on. It’s the grounding that makes the practitioner modules click into place.
Requirements Engineering is where a lot of projects live or die, so the diploma gives it real weight. You learn to elicit requirements from stakeholders who don’t always know what they want, document them clearly, validate them against the business need, and manage the inevitable changes — the discipline that stops teams building the wrong thing.
Business Analysis Practice teaches you to see the whole picture: analysing the business strategy, mapping stakeholders, building a defensible business case and recommending improvements that stick. Modelling Business Processes then gives you the notation and method to document how work flows today and design how it should flow tomorrow. Together, the four cover the investigate–define–improve cycle end to end.
Achieving the diploma
To earn the full diploma, you complete four modules and then sit an oral examination.
You complete four business analysis modules in total: both core modules — Business Analysis Practice and Requirements Engineering — plus one knowledge-based module and one practitioner module. Once those are complete, you sit an oral examination conducted by two BCS oral examiners.
BCS groups its business analysis certificates into two types: knowledge-based certificates, which test your understanding through a multiple-choice exam, and practitioner certificates, which test your ability to apply techniques through a scenario-based exam. The diploma deliberately requires a spread across both — which is why the pathway pairs the knowledge-based Foundation Certificate with the practitioner modules. Together they show you can understand the theory and put it to work.
The oral exam is entirely spoken, taken online, and lasts around 50 minutes. It assesses your knowledge and your ability to apply business analysis techniques to real-world scenarios. Exemptions are available if you already hold CBAP®, CPRE Foundation, or the Organisational Context module.
You don’t have to commit to the full diploma up front. Each course can be taken on its own for an individual BCS certification, and you can build towards the diploma at your own pace.
How long the whole thing takes is up to you. Each module is around 30 hours of study, so at a steady few hours a week most people work through the four in a matter of months, then book the oral examination once they feel ready. With 12 months’ access there’s no pressure to rush and no fixed exam dates to plan around.
Where it leads
A recognised qualification that maps directly to the roles employers are hiring for.
Business analysis is one of the more resilient careers in tech and change — almost every organisation running projects needs someone who can define the problem clearly before money is spent solving it. The International Diploma is aimed squarely at the roles that do this work: business analyst, senior or lead business analyst, requirements engineer, process analyst and business analysis consultant. Because it’s a BCS qualification, it’s a credential hiring managers recognise on sight — which matters when your CV is one of many.
For people already in analysis, the diploma is a way to formalise what you do day to day and add AMBCS post-nominals that signal professional standing. For career changers and IT professionals moving across, it’s a structured, credible way in — you finish with both the techniques and the certification employers ask for, rather than experience alone.
It’s also a stepping stone. Once you hold the International Diploma, the natural next move is the BCS Advanced International Diploma in Business Analysis, which builds on it for senior and lead roles. Whether the diploma is “worth it” comes down to that combination: a recognised credential, a complete skill set, professional membership, and a clear path to the next level.
