About these qualifications

What Is CBAP & CCBA?

The IIBA’s professional certifications for experienced business analysts, both based on the BABOK Guide — proving deep, demonstrated expertise in business analysis.

The qualifications explained

CCBA (Certification of Capability in Business Analysis) and CBAP (Certified Business Analysis Professional) are the IIBA’s professional-level credentials. CCBA is the intermediate certification for capable, practising business analysts; CBAP is the advanced, expert-level credential for those leading BA work. Both are based on the BABOK Guide, the global standard for business analysis.

This is one course that prepares you for both exams — two separate IIBA certifications at different experience levels. It covers the full BABOK in depth across all six knowledge areas, so whether you sit CCBA, CBAP, or progress from one to the other, you’re ready.

Both certifications require documented BA work experience. CCBA needs roughly 3,750 hours of business analysis experience (typically over the last seven years); CBAP needs roughly 7,500 hours (typically over the last ten years), along with professional development hours. You apply to IIBA and must meet the experience requirement for each — always check IIBA’s current eligibility criteria before applying.

In practice

Business Analysis in the Real World

The BABOK knowledge areas underpin business analysis across every kind of organisation. See how these skills apply in practice.

Financial Services

Defining requirements for a core banking change

A bank needed to modernise a legacy process without disrupting compliance. A senior BA used strategy analysis to map the current and future state, elicitation and collaboration to align stakeholders across risk, operations and IT, and requirements life cycle management to trace and prioritise every change. The result was a clear, agreed scope that survived audit.

Business analysis in action By grounding the work in the BABOK Guide, the BA produced a requirements package that was traceable, validated against business need, and signed off without rework.

Technology

Bridging product and engineering on a SaaS platform

A scaling software company struggled to translate strategy into deliverable work. Applying requirements analysis and design definition, the BA modelled and specified requirements, defined the requirements architecture, and analysed design options with engineering. Solution evaluation then measured whether shipped features actually delivered the expected value.

Business analysis in action Clear, modelled requirements cut ambiguity in delivery, and post-release performance measures fed straight back into the next round of prioritisation.

Public Sector

Driving a service transformation programme

A government department needed to redesign a citizen-facing service. The lead BA used business analysis planning and monitoring to set up governance and stakeholder engagement, then ran structured elicitation across multiple teams. Strategy analysis defined the change strategy and the risks, keeping a large, complex programme aligned to its outcomes.

Business analysis in action A disciplined, BABOK-based approach gave senior leaders confidence the change was justified, scoped and measurable before significant budget was committed.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I had a fantastic experience with Career Smarter from start to finish. Before enrolling on the CompTIA A+ course, they took the time to explain everything clearly, including what was included in the package and how the learning would work. I never felt rushed or pressured into making a decision, which I really appreciated.

They also showed me another training package that could be useful if I decide to continue my learning in the future, but there was absolutely no hard sell or constant follow-up. They simply gave me the information and left the decision entirely up to me, which made me feel much more comfortable.

To top it off, they offered me a discount, which was a lovely bonus.

The customer service has been excellent, they're knowledgeable, friendly, and genuinely helpful. Based on my experience so far, I would highly recommend Career Smarter to anyone looking to start or develop a career in IT.

Thank you Lanie for top customer service!

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before you enrol.

What's the difference between CCBA and CBAP?

They are two separate IIBA certifications at different experience levels, both based on the BABOK Guide. CCBA (Certification of Capability in Business Analysis) is the intermediate credential for capable, practising business analysts. CBAP (Certified Business Analysis Professional) is the advanced, expert-level credential — widely regarded as the gold standard for senior BAs. This single course prepares you for both exams.

What experience is required?

IIBA requires documented business analysis work experience for both certifications. CCBA requires roughly 3,750 hours of BA work experience (typically over the last seven years); CBAP requires roughly 7,500 hours (typically over the last ten years). Both also require professional development hours. You apply directly to IIBA and must meet the requirement for the certification you're sitting — always check IIBA's current eligibility criteria before applying.

Is the exam included?

No. The course covers your full training and exam preparation. The official IIBA exams (CCBA and CBAP) are sat separately and proctored through IIBA, with fees paid directly — they’re not included in the course price. You apply to IIBA and, once approved, sit the exam; your account manager supports you throughout.

Which should I take — CCBA or CBAP?

It comes down to your documented BA experience. If you have around 3,750 hours, CCBA is likely the right fit; if you have around 7,500 hours and want the top credential, aim for CBAP. Because this course covers the full BABOK in depth, it prepares you for either — and the early module helps you choose. Confirm your eligibility against IIBA's current criteria.

How long does it take?

Most learners work through the course over a few months alongside a full-time role, studying when it suits them. There's no time limit — you have 12 months access, so you can study at whatever pace fits around your work and your IIBA application timeline.

How does finance at checkout work?

At checkout you can choose flexible finance options to spread the cost. You'll gain immediate full access to all course materials as soon as your first payment is confirmed.
