Aspiring Project Managers
Moving into project management with no experience and want a recognised first qualification.
Get a recognised first qualification in project management. The APM Project Fundamentals Qualification proves you understand how projects work — no experience needed, and respected by employers across every sector.
About this qualification
An entry-level project management qualification from the APM — the chartered body for the profession.
The APM Project Fundamentals Qualification (PFQ) is an entry-level qualification awarded by the Association for Project Management (APM) — the UK’s chartered body for the project profession. It gives you a solid grounding in how projects work: the language, the life cycle, the roles, and the core planning that every project relies on.
There are no prerequisites — you don’t need any prior experience or qualifications. It’s the natural first step for anyone moving into project work, and it sets you up to progress to the APM Project Management Qualification (PMQ) when you’re ready.
The PFQ is recognised across every sector — IT, construction, business, and the public sector — and sits at RQF Level 3. It’s a credible way to show employers you understand the fundamentals, even before you’ve run a project of your own.
Is this for me?
The PFQ is for anyone starting out in project management, or working around projects and wanting to understand them properly.
Moving into project management with no experience and want a recognised first qualification.
Working on or around projects and want to understand how they really run.
Coming from another field and want a credible, recognised way into project work.
Already supporting projects and ready to formalise what you’ve picked up on the job.
Planning to take the APM PMQ later and want a solid grounding first.
The PFQ is sector-neutral — useful in IT, construction, business, and the public sector alike.

IT & Technology
A marketing team rebuilding their website needed it to land on time and on budget. Understanding the project life cycle meant they knew what should happen at each phase; clear roles meant everyone knew who decided what; and a simple scope definition stopped the “could we also add…” requests from quietly derailing the timeline.
Exam details
The official APM exam is an optional add-on — add it to your course at checkout, and we’ll arrange the booking with APM when you’re ready. The PFQ exam is closed book, so it’s about understanding the fundamentals rather than looking things up.
You sit the exam online through APM’s remote invigilation platform. Here’s the full process, from booking to results.
When you feel ready, contact your account manager. We handle the booking with APM and confirm your exam date, time, and joining instructions — usually within 5–10 working days.
You need a laptop or desktop computer (not a mobile or tablet), a working webcam and microphone, and a stable internet connection.
Log in 15 minutes before your scheduled start. The invigilator will verify your identity using photo ID and ask you to scan your room. The 60-minute timer then begins. No notes or materials are permitted — the exam is closed book.
You get a provisional pass or fail result as soon as you finish. Your official APM certificate and digital badge follow shortly after, with your result available in your APM candidate portal.
If you need to reschedule, contact us at least 48 hours before your exam time. We will arrange a new date at no additional charge.
