What Is PRINCE2 Agile?

PRINCE2 Agile blends the governance of PRINCE2 with the delivery style of agile. Here’s what the certification actually covers, who it’s for, and how the two levels differ.

Plenty of project managers get told to “be more agile” while still being held to a fixed budget, board reporting and a delivery date that won’t move. PRINCE2 Agile is built for exactly that tension. It isn’t a replacement for PRINCE2, and it isn’t Scrum with a certificate on top — it’s a way to run a properly governed project while the teams underneath you deliver in an agile way.

What PRINCE2 Agile actually is

PRINCE2 Agile is a certification from PeopleCert that sits on top of PRINCE2. PRINCE2 looks after the direction and control of a project — the business case, the stages, who has authority to decide what, and how progress gets reported. Agile looks after delivery — how the work actually gets done, usually through frameworks like Scrum and Kanban. PRINCE2 Agile is the guidance, and the qualification, for making those two operate together without one crushing the other.

The aim isn’t to pick governance or flexibility. It’s to keep the control a board needs while giving delivery teams room to work iteratively.

PRINCE2 Direction & control + Agile How work is delivered → PRINCE2 Agile Governed and agile
PRINCE2 governs the project; agile runs the delivery. PRINCE2 Agile is the guidance for doing both at once.

If you’re weighing agile against PRINCE2 as an either/or choice, that’s a different question — our guide on Agile vs PRINCE2 covers it. PRINCE2 Agile assumes you want both.

What the certification covers

Because it builds on PRINCE2, the familiar structure carries over — the principles, themes and processes still apply. What PRINCE2 Agile adds is the how: how to flex the PRINCE2 elements in an agile setting, how to use agile delivery inside a controlled project, and how to keep the whole thing honest. A few ideas do most of the heavy lifting:

  • Fix time and cost, flex scope. The deadline and the budget are protected; what varies is how much gets delivered by then. That’s the core move that lets an agile team work at pace without blowing up the plan.
  • Read how much agile a project can take. Not every environment can go full agile. PRINCE2 Agile gives you a way to judge how far to flex before governance suffers.
  • Lean on the five behaviours that make agile actually work in practice, rather than just on paper.

Those five behaviours are worth knowing by name, because they’re what separates “we do stand-ups” from genuinely agile delivery:

  • Transparency — everyone can see what’s really going on.
  • Collaboration — the team works as one unit, not as handoffs.
  • Rich communication — talking and showing beats long documents.
  • Self-organisation — the people doing the work decide how to do it.
  • Exploration — you learn by building and getting feedback early.

Who it’s genuinely for

PRINCE2 Agile makes most sense if you already work in — or are heading into — an environment that delivers in an agile way but still answers to formal project governance. Think a bank, a government department, a large change programme: the teams sprint, but there’s still a board, a budget and an audit trail.

If that’s your world, or you want to move into an agile project manager role, the certification is a clear signal that you can bridge both sides. If your projects are small, informal and fully agile end to end, a pure agile qualification may suit you better — PRINCE2 Agile earns its place precisely where control and speed are both non-negotiable.

Foundation and Practitioner

There are two levels. Foundation covers the concepts — enough to understand the approach and work confidently within an agile project. Practitioner teaches you to apply and tailor it on a real project, and it assumes you already hold a project management certification, such as PRINCE2 Foundation, going in.

Most people take Foundation first and add Practitioner once the concepts have settled. If you’re not sure which PRINCE2 route fits you, our guide on which PRINCE2 course to do walks through the options.

PRINCE2 Agile vs plain PRINCE2

A common mix-up: PRINCE2 Agile isn’t a newer or “better” PRINCE2. It’s PRINCE2 plus the agile layer. If you’re deciding between the two, we’ve broken it down in PRINCE2 vs PRINCE2 Agile. The short version: learn PRINCE2 for the method, and add PRINCE2 Agile when your delivery world is agile.

So, is PRINCE2 Agile worth learning?

If you run or coordinate projects where “agile” and “governance” are both non-negotiable, yes — it’s one of the few qualifications that treats that combination as the whole point rather than an awkward compromise. Start with Foundation to lock in the concepts, then add Practitioner when you’re ready to apply it on live work. You’ll find both levels, with the official PeopleCert exam included, on our PRINCE2 Agile courses.
