About this qualification

What Is the BCS Practitioner Certificate in Requirements Engineering?

A deep, practical grounding in getting requirements right — and one of the two mandatory modules of the BCS International Diploma.

The qualification explained

The BCS Practitioner Certificate in Requirements Engineering is a practitioner-level qualification certified by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT. It focuses on the discipline of requirements engineering: the structured way business analysts discover, define and manage what a solution must do.

You’ll work through the full requirements engineering framework — eliciting requirements through interviews, workshops and document analysis; analyzing and modeling them; documenting them clearly (including user stories); validating them with stakeholders; and managing change and traceability as they evolve.

It’s one of the two core modules of the BCS International Diploma in Business Analysis. There’s no formal prerequisite, though the Foundation Certificate is recommended first.

In practice

Requirements Engineering in the United States

Most project failures trace back to unclear requirements. See how getting them right changes the outcome.

Eliciting

Uncovering the requirement behind the request

Stakeholders asked for “a better dashboard”. Structured elicitation — a focused workshop and a few well-chosen interviews — revealed the real need was a weekly exception report, not a dashboard at all. The request and the requirement were two different things.

Requirements engineering in action Asking “why” with the right techniques, instead of building what was first asked for, saved months of work on the wrong thing.

Documenting

Writing requirements developers can actually build

Requirements were vague one-liners open to interpretation, and every sprint surfaced disagreements about what was meant. Rewriting them as clear, testable statements with acceptance criteria ended the guesswork.

Requirements engineering in action User stories with proper acceptance criteria cut the clarification back-and-forth dramatically — and the rework that came with it.

Managing Change

Keeping control as requirements evolve

Halfway through delivery, scope kept creeping and no one was sure which version of the requirements had actually been agreed. A simple change-control and traceability approach restored order without slowing the team down.

Requirements engineering in action Traceability meant every change could be traced to its source and its impact — so decisions about scope were deliberate, not accidental.

I was looking for an AgilePM foundation course and found Career Smarter (thorough the Reed website), I requested information and received a prompt and helpful response from Lanie detailing the different options and prices etc. Lanie followed up a few days later but there was no sense of feeling pressured, nor any phone calls, just email and WhatsApp messages, giving me the time to consider the options and compare with others. I’ve now booked my course (which was easy, the website is good) which as it happens is also less expensive than other offers, and I’m encouraged by the other very positive reviews of this company.
Thank you Lanie, we haven’t spoken yet but I haven’t forgotten that you are on hand if I need further assistance.
