About this qualification

What Is the BCS Practitioner Certificate in Business Analysis Practice?

The core practitioner qualification at the heart of the BA role — and one of the two mandatory modules of the BCS International Diploma.

The qualification explained

The BCS Practitioner Certificate in Business Analysis Practice is a practitioner-level qualification certified by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT. It sits at the heart of the BA role: understanding the business situation, working out what really needs to change, and shaping the solution.

You’ll learn to analyze the strategic context, map stakeholder perspectives, build business activity models, find the gaps between how things are and how they should be, and develop and justify the right solution through a business case.

It’s one of the two mandatory core modules of the BCS International Diploma in Business Analysis. There’s no formal prerequisite, though some practical BA experience helps and the Foundation Certificate is recommended first.

In practice

Business Analysis Practice in the United States

The hardest part of any project is working out what should actually change. See how the practice gets it right.

Analysing the Situation

Working out what really needs to change

Leadership was convinced the problem was the software. Analysing the strategic context and the stakeholders’ different perspectives revealed the real gap was in how two teams handed work over — no new system required.

Business analysis in action Mapping perspectives with CATWOE surfaced a disagreement about purpose that no one had named — and that was the actual problem.

Modeling the Business

Getting agreement on what the business does

Two departments described the same area of the business completely differently. A business activity model built with both in the room produced a single, agreed picture of what the business needed to do — and where it was falling short.

Business analysis in action A consensus business activity model turned a turf war into a shared view of the gaps.

Justifying the Solution

Making the case for the right solution

Several fixes were on the table and everyone had a favourite. A structured business case weighed the costs, benefits, impact and risk of each so the decision was based on value, not on who argued hardest.

Business analysis in action Defining a holistic solution — people, process and technology — stopped the team from buying software to fix what was really a process problem.

I was looking for an AgilePM foundation course and found Career Smarter (thorough the Reed website), I requested information and received a prompt and helpful response from Lanie detailing the different options and prices etc. Lanie followed up a few days later but there was no sense of feeling pressured, nor any phone calls, just email and WhatsApp messages, giving me the time to consider the options and compare with others. I’ve now booked my course (which was easy, the website is good) which as it happens is also less expensive than other offers, and I’m encouraged by the other very positive reviews of this company.
Thank you Lanie, we haven’t spoken yet but I haven’t forgotten that you are on hand if I need further assistance.
