PRINCE2 vs PRINCE2 Agile: What’s the Difference?
PRINCE2 and PRINCE2 Agile sound like rivals, but one builds on the other. Here’s the real difference, the prerequisite that often decides it, and which to take first.
The names look almost identical, which is exactly why people get stuck choosing between them. PRINCE2 and PRINCE2 Agile aren’t two versions of the same thing, and they’re not really rivals — one is the project management method, the other builds on it. Here’s the difference in plain terms, and how to tell which one you should actually take.
The quick answer
PRINCE2 is the method: how you direct and control a project from start to finish. PRINCE2 Agile takes that method and adds a layer — how to run it when your delivery teams work in an agile way, using Scrum, Kanban and short iterations. So PRINCE2 Agile doesn’t compete with PRINCE2; it extends it.
That has one practical consequence worth knowing up front: PRINCE2 Agile expects you to already understand project governance. Which usually means PRINCE2 comes first.
| PRINCE2 | PRINCE2 Agile | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A structured project management method | PRINCE2 plus an agile delivery layer |
| Best for | Any project that needs governance and control | Governed projects that are delivered in an agile way |
| Delivery style | Environment-agnostic — waterfall, agile or a mix | Agile delivery (Scrum, Kanban) inside PRINCE2 control |
| Prerequisite to sit | Foundation: none | Practitioner: a prior PM certification (e.g. PRINCE2 Foundation) |
| Sensible first step | PRINCE2 Foundation | PRINCE2 Agile Foundation |
| Take it if… | You want the core method and the broadest recognition | Your teams work agile but still report to a board |
What PRINCE2 gives you
PRINCE2 is a structured method for running projects — the business case, the stages, the roles, the board, and the reporting that keeps everyone honest. It’s deliberately environment-agnostic: you can run a PRINCE2 project in a traditional waterfall style, an agile style, or somewhere in between. What it standardises is the control — who decides what, when, and on what evidence.
That makes it a strong starting point for anyone moving into structured project management, which is why it’s so widely asked for in UK job ads. We’ve set out the case in more detail in the benefits of PRINCE2.
What PRINCE2 Agile adds
PRINCE2 Agile keeps all of that and bolts on the agile delivery layer: protecting the deadline and budget while flexing scope, the five agile behaviours, and a way to judge how much agile a given environment can actually handle. It’s built for places that deliver iteratively but still answer to formal governance. We go through it properly in What is PRINCE2 Agile?
One clarification that trips people up: if you’re comparing PRINCE2 to agile methods in general — Scrum, Kanban and the like — rather than to PRINCE2 Agile specifically, that’s a separate question we cover in Agile vs PRINCE2.
The prerequisite that often decides it
Here’s the deciding factor for a lot of people. PRINCE2 Foundation has no entry requirements — anyone can start. PRINCE2 Agile Practitioner, on the other hand, assumes you already hold a project management certification such as PRINCE2 Foundation before you sit it.
So for most people the natural order is PRINCE2 first, then PRINCE2 Agile once your delivery world calls for it. You’re not picking one forever — they stack.

Study online at your own pace. Start with PRINCE2, add PRINCE2 Agile when your projects go agile.
Which should you take?
It comes down to where you are and where your projects are heading:
- New to structured project management, or you just want the most widely recognised method — go with PRINCE2, starting at Foundation.
- Already working in, or moving into, agile-under-governance (a bank, a government department, a large programme) — PRINCE2 Agile is aimed squarely at you.
- Want the full toolkit — do PRINCE2 first, then add PRINCE2 Agile.
If you’re genuinely torn, start with PRINCE2 Foundation. It’s the base both routes build on, nothing is wasted if you add PRINCE2 Agile later, and it’s the qualification employers recognise fastest. Our guide on which PRINCE2 course to do helps you narrow it down from there.
