How Long Does a PRINCE2 Course Take?
From a few days to a few weeks — a realistic breakdown of the time each PRINCE2 course needs, and what changes it.
You’ve decided PRINCE2 is worth doing. The next question is the practical one — how much time does it actually take? The honest answer is “it depends on which course and how you study”, but that’s not much use on its own, so here’s a realistic breakdown.
The short answer
Most people complete PRINCE2 Foundation in around two to three weeks of part-time study, or a few focused days full-time. Practitioner adds roughly the same again. Do them together and four to six weeks part-time is typical. Because our PRINCE2 courses are online and self-paced, those are guides, not deadlines — you get 12 months’ access and set the pace around work.
PRINCE2 Foundation
Foundation is the entry level, with no prerequisites. The exam is 60 multiple-choice questions, closed book, 60 minutes, and you need 36 correct (60%) to pass. The learning is a handful of short modules on the principles, themes and processes. A couple of evenings a week and most people are ready inside a fortnight.
PRINCE2 Practitioner
Practitioner proves you can apply PRINCE2 to a real project, not just recall it. It’s open book and scenario-based — 70 questions, 150 minutes, 42 to pass. It asks more of you, so give it a little more time, especially if you’re newer to running projects. You’ll need Foundation (or an accepted equivalent) first.
Foundation and Practitioner together
If you already know you want both, doing them back to back is the efficient route — the Foundation knowledge is still fresh when you step up. Our Foundation & Practitioner course bundles the two exams, and most learners get through it in four to six weeks part-time.

Does a longer course cost more?

Our recommendation
Don’t over-plan it. You’re better off starting Foundation this month and giving it two or three focused weeks than waiting for a clear diary that never arrives. If a project management career is the goal, go straight for Foundation & Practitioner — same study habit, a stronger qualification at the end.
