Lean Six Sigma Green Belt is the practitioner-level certification in process improvement, accredited by APMG International. It builds on the fundamentals of Lean (removing waste) and Six Sigma (reducing variation) and teaches you to lead full improvement projects that deliver measurable results.

At Green Belt level you take the DMAIC cycle (Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve, Control) end to end, applying statistical tools to find the real root causes of problems and prove that your changes worked. You learn to scope a project, gather and read data, and hand over an improvement that sticks.

The Practical Project Assessment

Green Belt is earned by doing, not just by passing a test. After the theory exam you complete one real improvement project and submit it for review. Here’s how it works.

Sit the theory exam

You take the official multiple-choice theory exam online, through a remote-invigilation platform. It’s open book, and you book it directly with APMG when you’re ready. You get a provisional result as soon as you finish.

Choose your project

Pick a real process in your own organisation that needs improving. Your account manager can help you scope something suitable and sized for Green Belt.

Run the DMAIC cycle

Work the project through Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve and Control, following a recognised roadmap (DMAIC, DMADV or PDCA) and documenting what you do at each stage.

Demonstrate results

Your project should show a clear, sustainable result — typically cost savings of at least €20,000 a year, or a substantial improvement in a critical-to-quality (CTQ) measure. A project champion confirms your conduct and the outcome.

Submit & get certified

Submit your completed project for review — you have up to 3 years from passing the theory exam to do so. Once it’s accepted you receive your official accredited Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certificate and digital badge.

Is this course officially recognised?

Yes. The course is recognised by APMG International, a leading certification body for Lean Six Sigma. Both stages of certification — the official theory exam and the practical project assessment — are sat separately with APMG and paid for directly, and are not included in the course price. When you pass both, you receive an official Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certificate that’s recognised by employers worldwide, plus a shareable digital badge.

How long does the course take?

Most learners work through the materials in 6–12 weeks at around 2–3 hours a day — roughly 40 hours of study. The practical project then runs alongside your work and takes as long as the improvement itself. You have 12 months' access to the materials, and up to 3 years from passing the theory exam to submit your project.

What happens if I don't pass?

If you don't pass the theory exam, you keep full access to all your course materials and practice papers, and your Account Manager will help you prepare for a re-sit. For the project, your account manager and the course materials guide you through scoping and writing it up so it meets the assessment standard.

Do I need any prior experience?

There are no formal entry requirements — you don't need to hold the Yellow Belt first. That said, Green Belt is a practitioner-level qualification, so some experience of process improvement and comfort with basic data and statistics will help. If you're completely new to the methodology, the Yellow Belt is a gentler starting point — and you can add it at checkout.
