About this qualification

What Is CIW User Interface Designer?

A globally recognised, vendor-neutral certification in user interface and user-centred design — the skills behind interfaces people love to use.

The qualification explained

CIW User Interface Designer is a globally recognised, vendor-neutral certification in user interface and user-centred design. It teaches the principles behind creating clear, accessible, and attractive interfaces for the web and mobile — covering design principles, usability, information architecture, navigation, and accessibility.

You’ll learn how to design effective web and mobile interfaces: applying user-centred design, structuring information architecture and navigation, building strong visual design and layout, and designing for accessibility and a range of devices. Together these give you a practical, employer-relevant foundation in modern UI/UX design.

The course is delivered as interactive course materials, lessons, exercises and practice tests, and forms part of the CIW Web and Mobile Design series. It’s an ideal step for aspiring designers, web designers, and developers adding design skills to their toolkit.

In practice

UI Design in the Real World

The same design principles underpin great digital experiences across every kind of product. See how UI design applies in practice.

E-commerce

Turning a confusing checkout into a smooth, high-converting flow

An online retailer was losing customers at checkout. Applying user-centred design, the team mapped what shoppers actually needed at each step and simplified the flow. Clearer navigation and stronger visual hierarchy reduced confusion, while usability testing surfaced the friction points that were quietly costing sales.

UI design in action By streamlining the form layout and making the primary action obvious, the team made the checkout faster to complete — and far easier for new and returning customers alike.

SaaS Product

Redesigning a dashboard people could finally understand

A software team’s dashboard had grown cluttered and overwhelming. Using information architecture and clear layout principles, they reorganised content around the tasks users perform most. Strong typography and consistent components made the interface scannable, and prototyping and testing validated the new design before a single line of production code was written.

UI design in action Wireframing the new layout early let the team catch a confusing navigation pattern before launch — saving costly rework later.

Public Sector

Making a public service accessible to everyone

A public-sector service needed to work for the widest possible range of users. Designing for accessibility ensured the interface worked with assistive technology, sufficient colour contrast, and clear focus states. User-centred design kept the language and navigation simple, so people could complete tasks regardless of device or ability.

UI design in action By designing to accessibility principles from the start, the team delivered a service that more people could use independently — and met inclusive-design expectations without a costly retrofit.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I had a fantastic experience with Career Smarter from start to finish. Before enrolling on the CompTIA A+ course, they took the time to explain everything clearly, including what was included in the package and how the learning would work. I never felt rushed or pressured into making a decision, which I really appreciated.

They also showed me another training package that could be useful if I decide to continue my learning in the future, but there was absolutely no hard sell or constant follow-up. They simply gave me the information and left the decision entirely up to me, which made me feel much more comfortable.

To top it off, they offered me a discount, which was a lovely bonus.

The customer service has been excellent, they're knowledgeable, friendly, and genuinely helpful. Based on my experience so far, I would highly recommend Career Smarter to anyone looking to start or develop a career in IT.

Thank you Lanie for top customer service!
