The role
What is an IT service manager?
An IT service manager makes sure the technology services an organisation relies on are reliable, well-supported and continually improving. Rather than building software, they own how IT is delivered — incidents, changes, service levels and the experience users get.
Day to day the work involves managing incident and problem resolution, overseeing change, owning service-level agreements, reporting on performance, and driving improvement. The ITIL® 4 framework is the global standard that gives this work a common language and set of practices.
It is a stable, well-paid career that exists in every organisation with IT — and demand is strong as businesses depend more heavily on always-on digital services. It also offers a clear route from the service desk into management and strategy.
Many people move into service management from the service desk, support or operations roles. You do not need a degree — you need a recognised ITIL® certification, the right people and process skills, and some hands-on support experience.
This role suits you if…
- You like making services run smoothly
- You’re calm under pressure during incidents
- You enjoy improving process and quality
- You want a stable, in-demand IT career
- You want to move from support into management
