What PRINCE2 actually is

PRINCE2 — short for PRojects IN Controlled Environments — is a process-based project management method: a step-by-step system for starting up, running, and closing a project, with clear decision points and defined responsibilities at every stage. It’s owned by PeopleCert and used by organisations in more than 150 countries. In Australia it’s especially entrenched in the public sector — a Victorian Auditor-General review found PRINCE2 the most widely used project management method across the state’s government ICT projects — and it remains a common requirement in federal, state, and Defence-related delivery roles.

That makes it a genuinely practical credential whether you’re aiming for government and Defence work, a major consultancy, or enterprise project teams in banking, resources, infrastructure, or technology. Because the method is built to scale up or down, the same framework fits a small internal initiative or a multi-year, multi-vendor programme — and because it’s recognised in more than 150 countries, the qualification travels with you if you work for global employers or move between markets.

Foundation is the entry point, and there are no prerequisites — no prior experience or degree required. It confirms you can speak PRINCE2’s common language: its seven principles, seven themes, and seven processes for planning work, managing risk, controlling change, and reporting progress. Pass it and you’ve got a recognised base to build on — toward Practitioner, and into project coordinator, project manager, and senior delivery roles across Australia.
