About this qualification

What Is the APM PFQ?

An entry-level project management qualification from the APM — the chartered body for the profession.

What the APM PFQ is

The APM Project Fundamentals Qualification (PFQ) is an entry-level qualification awarded by the Association for Project Management (APM), a chartered professional body whose qualifications are recognised internationally. It gives you a solid grounding in how projects work: the language, the life cycle, the roles, and the core planning every project relies on.

There are no prerequisites — you don’t need any prior experience or qualifications. It’s a natural first step for anyone moving into project work, and it sets you up to progress to the APM Project Management Qualification (PMQ) when you’re ready.

The PFQ applies across every sector — IT, construction, business, and the public sector. In Australia, it’s a credible way to show employers you understand project fundamentals, even before you’ve run a project of your own.

In practice

Project Fundamentals in Australia

The fundamentals you learn apply to projects in every sector. Here’s how they show up day to day.

IT & Technology

Coordinating a website rebuild

A marketing team rebuilding their website needed it to land on time and on budget. Understanding the project life cycle meant they knew what should happen at each phase; clear roles meant everyone knew who decided what; and a simple scope definition stopped the “could we also add…” requests from quietly derailing the timeline.

Fundamentals in action Because scope was written down and agreed up front, a mid-project request for an extra feature was logged and reviewed rather than just absorbed — so the launch date held.

Construction

Managing an office relocation

An office move involved contractors, IT, and dozens of staff. Knowing the fundamentals — a clear plan, defined responsibilities, and a stakeholder list — turned a daunting job into a sequence of manageable steps, with the right people kept informed at the right time.

Fundamentals in action Identifying stakeholders early meant the facilities team, IT, and department heads were all consulted before move day — so there were no nasty surprises when everyone arrived at the new site.

Business

Launching a new product

A small business launching a new product treated it as a project for the first time. Breaking it into life-cycle phases, planning the work, and thinking through the obvious risks meant the launch was deliberate rather than chaotic — and the team could see whether it was on track.

Fundamentals in action A quick risk review flagged that a key supplier had a long lead time. Ordering early — rather than discovering the problem late — kept the launch on schedule.

What to Expect on Exam Day

You sit the exam online through APM’s remote invigilation platform. Here’s the full process, from booking to results.

Booking

When you feel ready, contact your account manager. We handle the booking with APM and confirm your exam date, time, and joining instructions — usually within 5–10 working days.

Equipment required

You need a laptop or desktop computer (not a mobile or tablet), a working webcam and microphone, and a stable internet connection.

On the day

Log in 15 minutes before your scheduled start. The invigilator will verify your identity using photo ID and ask you to scan your room. The 60-minute timer then begins. No notes or materials are permitted — the exam is closed book.

Results

You get a provisional pass or fail result as soon as you finish. Your official APM certificate and digital badge follow shortly after, with your result available in your APM candidate portal.

Rescheduling

If you need to reschedule, contact us at least 48 hours before your exam time. We will arrange a new date at no additional charge.

I was looking for an AgilePM foundation course and found Career Smarter (thorough the Reed website), I requested information and received a prompt and helpful response from Lanie detailing the different options and prices etc. Lanie followed up a few days later but there was no sense of feeling pressured, nor any phone calls, just email and WhatsApp messages, giving me the time to consider the options and compare with others. I’ve now booked my course (which was easy, the website is good) which as it happens is also less expensive than other offers, and I’m encouraged by the other very positive reviews of this company.
Thank you Lanie, we haven’t spoken yet but I haven’t forgotten that you are on hand if I need further assistance.
